Tteokbokki, a dish made out of rice cakes in a spicy sauce

Welcome to Feed the Lens! A series of casual articles where we bring you on a journey with us as we go around Singapore to try different eateries when we are off work.

Today, we will be introducing you to HoHo Korean Restaurant at Sunset Way in Clementi.

Our First Impression

The Restaurant has a nice homely feel with seating both indoors and outdoors and the warm lighting does set a relatively cosy ambience.

On top of that, we were very pleased with the staff's friendliness and I think that it is a very important trait for restaurant staff to have. The restaurant seemed well staffed so waiting time for catching a waiter's attention is minimal and they are very alert.

The Food

Kimchi

As with most Korean Restaurants, we were provided with a number side dishes to start of the meal. This included Kimchi, an essential part of every Korean meal, as well as items such as fishcake, anchovies and beansprouts.

Sikhye

For a drink, i got Sikhye which is a traditional sweet Korean rice beverage. I always love the flavour of the malt and the presence of the residue from the rice adds a nice texture to the drink. It is also believed to aid digestion and it contains anti-oxidants.

Haemul Pajeon

Soon after, the rest of our dishes began to arrive. We would highly recommend Haemul-Pajeon which is a Korean seafood pancake. It has a cripsy exterior with a nice softer interior and contains leek and prawn which gives the dish a wonderful flavour. Eaten with a quick dip into soya sauce, this dish is a comfort food for the ages. Another dish we had was the Tteokbokki which is a dish made of rice cakes simmered in a spicy sauce. HoHo's rice cakes were exquisite as they were playfully chewy and the fishcake and egg that came with it certainly added another dimension to the flavour of the dish.

Cheese-Buldak

One of the dishes I would say was very interesting is the Cheese-Buldak as its a modern take on a traditional Korean dish. It is made of spicy stir-fried chicken in a spicy marinade with cheese on top. The spicy and sweet flavour of the chicken is well complemented by the creamy flavour of the cheese and I am really glad this modern twist was a dish on the table. We also really enjoyed the Jjajangmyeon which is a Noodle topped with a black bean sauce containing diced pork and vegetables. What I liked about this particular rendition was that it was not overly salty. A huge issue with many of the variations of this dish in other restaurants is that it is overly salty and masks all the other flavours which is why i was pleasantly surprised upon taking the first bite.

Bulgolgi

Without a doubt, one of the highlights of a Korean meal for any foodie is probably Bulgolgi or "fire meat". At HoHo, you can choose whether you want the marinade to be spicy or not. For us, we opted to have it mildly spicy and let me tell you, we were delighted by how juicy the meat was. The mild sweet flavour alongside the spice was delicious and we enjoyed it alongside a portion of rice which came in those metal rice bowls that are commonplace in Korean restaurants. On top of all this, HoHo's Samgyetang, a ginseng chicken soup, was very well done as the chicken was very tender and the soup was rich with flavour. The serving of chicken and ginseng was also very generous. After a tiring day at work, this might just be the perfect dish to restore your energy!

Final thoughts

We really loved this restaurant and we would come back anytime. If you love good Korean food and want a nice place to have a meal with your friends or family, this is the place. I have to say we were also very happy with the waiting time for the food as it was relatively short and yet the quality of the food was not compromised. So what are you waiting for?
